Computer Game censorship

September 3rd, 2009

I read an article today from The Register entitled GTA maker coughs up $20m for ‘hot coffee’ sex.

Now if anyone doesn’t know the background to this story, here it is.  When Take2 released the game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas there was a hidden mini game in it that involved the character having sex with his girlfriend.

Now this scene, whilst included in the code, was NOT accessible through the gameplay unless you applied a hack to the game itself.

In the US, typically, ‘everyone went mad’ slapping an Adults only rating on the game instead of a Mature rating, a game I’ll note that had already been given an 18 rating by the BBFC here in the UK.

Take2 also spent 10’s of millions pulling all copies off the shelves and then releasing a patched version… only for class-action lawsuits to come rolling in.

Let’s put this in perspective shall we? A checklist of what’s in GTA games

  • Guns – OK
  • Stealing cars – OK
  • Murder – OK
  • Police killing – OK
  • Organised crime – OK
  • Blowing things up – OK
  • Prostitutes – OK
  • Mini-game for having sex with your girlfriend (whilst both characters were FULLY CLOTHED) – OMG we must pull the game off the shelves and everyone sues us!

Here is my take (and also one I read in the comments of the original article) on the situation.

A child keeps pestering their parent to buy them GTA, so they go and buy it regardless of the rating because ‘it’s a computer game’ and ‘all computer games are for kids’ aren’t they?

News of this game hack hits the news which now brings to their parent’s attention that this game is full of sex and violence.

This embarrasses the parent that their bad parenting skills have meant that their little angel is playing a game full of content not designed for them… hence the entire purpose of the RATING SYSTEM!  Obviously the parent can’t be to blame, it must be the fault of the developers, so let’s sue them!

A weekend of XBox 360

January 18th, 2009

XBox 360You can’t argue with spending a day of playing on the XBox 360, well you can but I enjoyed it!

So I’ve been playing with a few new games recently.  Now I often find it very hard to get into a game longer than a few plays, and indeed in the past the only two that have really gripped me are Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Vegas.

So I’ve been playing recently Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Vegas 2, 007 Quantum of Solace, WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2009, Call of Duty: World at War and Need for Speed Pro-Street.

So I’ve already got bored with Need for Speed and Rainbow Six Vegas 2.  Call of Duty: WaW had me gripped for a few weeks, especially as I leveled up to the max during the beta, but now that’s bored me.

007 and WWE I’m enjoying in single player mode very much at the moment, but for XBox Live, I keep being drawn back to CoD4 for some reason.  Bring on Call of Duty: Modern Warefare 2 in the autumn (fall for any US readers).

So this weekend I’ve managed to up my gamer score by about 500 and up my CoD4 level to 49 Prestige 2, that was until either BT or XBox Live decided that the Internet was something that should run at 28.8kbs again.

How to get a Wii Fit the easy way

November 26th, 2008

So last year it was the Wii console that was impossible to buy, now it’s the Wii Fit.

What is it with the UK having a lack of stock of just the thing everyone seems to want.  Well it seems Germany and France have loads of them.  You can buy them from Amazon France and Amazon Germany and have them shipped to the UK for cheaper than most UK retailers are selling them.  This website even gives a step by step guide on how to order it!
